Ma was the 'inspector of the district', and his rectangular coffin dates to the beginning of the Middle Kingdom. The exterior of the lid bears hieroglyphic inscriptions consisting of offering formulae and also painted decoration representing the facade of a palace. This latter motif was already applied to the sides of Old Kingdom sarcophagi. The interior is decorated with an object frieze, showing items which the deceased would need for a life in the Hereafter without dangers or worries, and also with hieratic spells from the 'Coffin Texts', a collection of funerary texts containing about 1200 formulae.
