Description
The jackal was the sacred animal of the god Wepwawet and Anubis, the god of mummification. The sculpture of this sacred animal with his young ones is unique. The group is portrayed on a rectangular base on which the jackal is lying on his side. Two of the four young jackals are held in his paws, one sits between the paw and the tail, and the other is held under the jackal's face. A scene of this type depicts the concept of paternal or maternal protection, which was synonymous with birth.
