Spindle

BrE.1031B.jpg

This wooden spindle was found, with three other similar objects, in the tomb of the "embroideress" at Antinoopolis during the excavations of A. Gayet. The instrument served to spin linen or wool. The lower surface of the disc is slightly curved, whereas the upper surface takes the form of a small cone with a hook. Notice the thread of brown colour on the long reel slightly damaged at the edge.
