Description
Carved from a semiprecious stone and probably worn as an amulet, this hippopotamus goddess is either Taweret or Ipet. Like Bes, she was a protective deity for the child and its mother. She is holding the symbol for "protection" in front of her. The tenon on her head once supported a crown, now lost.
