Description
Taweret, the hippopotamus goddess, was the protector of women in pregnancy and confinement. Taweret is represented here in her typical form with the head of a hippopotamus, the legs and arms of a lion, the tail of a crocodile, and with sagging human breasts. This fierce combination was believed to deter all harmful forces and protect women during pregnancy and labor. Her protective role is further emphasized by the Sa sign, a symbol of protection that she holds in her hands.
