In the Middle Kingdom, the king and officials sealed administrative documents using scarab-shaped seals made from a variety of stones. The flat underside, which bore the name and titles of the king or official, was pressed into the soft clay. The small Brussels seal bears the cartouche of Neferhotep I, a little-known king of the 13th Dynasty, and the name of his mother Kemi.
