Ivory disk incised on one side with the number 17 in Latin and Greek numerals, for admission to a theatre. Theatre was an essential feature of Greek culture, and imported into Egypt under the Ptolemies. This token comes from Oxyrhynchus, capital of the nineteenth province of Upper Egypt. In the Roman Period the city seems to have been extensively Hellenized, and its theatre was one of the largest in the Empire.
