Town in Upper Egypt, to the north of the first cataract. On the east bank of the Nile are the remains of the old town, with a temple of Isis, built by Ptolemy II, and a temple that was built by Domitian and Nerva, probably for Khnum, Satet and Anuqet. Not far away are the quarries from which the Egyptians extracted granite, and an unfinished obelisk. On the west bank is the necropolis of Qubbet el-Hawa with rock-cut tombs mainly from the Old Kingdom and the Middle Kingdom. In the Nile is the island of Elephantine, with the remains of a town founded as early as the predynastic period, the temples of Khnum and Satet, and a Nilometer.
