Kohl pot

30.86.24.jpg

A kohl pot in the form of a hedgehog, made of green glazed faience. The pot has a vase top and a flat handle projecting from the animal's back. The modelling is very good, the spines are well incised. Hedgehogs appear in all periods of Egyptian history, often among tomb offerings, perhaps indicative of a protective significance. The Egyptians' love of nature was often reflected in the designs of such vessels.
