Mummy portraits of the Roman Period form the largest corpus of surviving classical painting, and have in most cases been removed from the mummy wrappings with which they were found. This is a rare example of an exceptionally fine portrait intact on the wrapped body of the person depicted, a young woman with the earrings and hairdo typical of the late first century AD.
