Temple wall fragment carved in relief

1906353.JPG

This is one of numerous relief fragments from a series of offering-bearers or courtiers, retrieved by the Egypt Exploration Fund in the clearance of the temple of king Nebhepetra Mentuhotep on the West Bank at Thebes. This fragment shows the head and upper body of a man with shaven hair and both arms extended to the right. The irregular position of the nearer arm indicates an energetic action, and the figure may belong to a scene of butchery that was part of the preparation of meat-offerings for the royal cult.
