From the end of the Old Kingdom, the Egyptians departed for the next life accompanied by plastered and painted wooden models which took the place of wall reliefs and stone models. This model of a boat dating from the Middle Kingdom has a helmsman and 11 rowers; a 13th person who sets the pace is shown on the prow of the boat.. The model should be considered as an offering which was placed in the tomb of the dead person.
