General Comment
Preservation: The sun-disk which would have been between the horns has been lost. Iconography: Apis was regarded as the manifestation of the god Ptah of Memphis, and living Apis bulls were kept in palatial quarters at Memphis. When dead they were embalmed on lion-headed alabaster tables and buried with great ceremony at the 'Serapeum' in the Saqqara necropolis, discovered in 1851 by Marriette.
