Description
A bronze statuette of the goddess Hatmehit, with the infant Horus, in a role normally associated with Isis. Hatmehit wears a long wig and a crown surmounted by a fish. Her eyes are inlaid with gold. Horus has a sidelock and his hands rest against his thighs.

Bronzen beeldje van de godin Hatmehit, met het kind Horus, in een rol die meestal met Isis wordt geassocieerd. Hatmehit draagt een lange pruik en een kroon met daarop een vis. Haar ogen zijn met goud ingelegd. Horus heeft een kinderlok; de handen rusten op zijn dijen.

General Comment
Iconography: Hatmehyt was a fish-goddess who was worshipped in the Delta, her cult centre was at Mendes.The fish as a deity is relatively rare in Egyptian mythology, Hatmehyt's name means 'She who is in front of the fishes', indicative of her pre-eminence in relation to the other fish cults. Her worship at Mendes declined as that of her consort, the ram god Banebdjedet, became more important. She is usually represented as a woman with a fish emblem, the Nile carp (Lepidotus), on her head or as a fish.
