Description
A wooden model of a Ba-bird, with a human head. It is painted gesso and well decorated but crudely fashioned. The Ba was the part of a person associated with the concept of 'personality', being the attributes that made any one individual unique. It is often portrayed in funerary reliefs as a bird with a human head and sometimes arms. It was necessary for the dead person to journey from the tomb to rejoin his Ka and become an Akh or spirit in the Afterlife, but as this was a physical impossibility it became the duty of the Ba. In order that the physical body of the deceased should survive in the Afterlife, it needed to be reunited with the Ba every night.

De Ba was dat deel van de mens dat werd geassocieerd met het concept 'persoonlijkheid', de attributen die ieder individu uniek maken. De Ba wordt dikwijls in funeraire reliëfs afgebeeld als een vogel met een menselijk hoofd, soms met armen. Voor de dode was het noodzakelijk vanuit zijn graf op zoek te gaan naar zijn Ka en een 'ach' of geest te worden in het hiernamaals. Omdat dit fysiek onmogelijk was werd dit de taak van de Ba. Opdat het lichaam van de overledene in het hiernamaals zou overleven diende het elke nacht met zijn Ba te worden herenigd.

Le Ba était une notion spirituelle associée au concept de 'personnalité', ensemble des attributs qui rendent chaque individu unique. Il est souvent représenté, sur les reliefs funéraires, sous la forme d'un oiseau à tête humaine, parfois pourvu de bras. Il permettait au défunt de sortir de sa tombe pour rejoindre son Ka et devenir un 'Akh' ou une force spirituelle glorifiée dans l'au-delà. Physiquement, le défunt ne pouvait accomplir ce voyage. Le Ba remplissait cette fonction. Pour que l'enveloppe charnelle du défunt puisse survivre dans l'au-delà, elle devait s'unir au Ba chaque nuit.

Der Ba war derjenige Teil der Person, der mit dem Konzept 'Persönlichkeit' verbunden war; er vereinigte die Attribute, die jedes Individuum einzigartig machten. Er wird auf Grabreliefs häufig als Vogel mit menschlichem Kopf und manchmal auch Armen dargestellt. Der Tote mußte aus seinem Grab hervorkommen, um sich mit seinem Ka zu vereinen und ein 'Ach' oder Geist im Jenseits zu werden; da dies aber physisch unmöglich war, wurde es zur Aufgabe des Ba gemacht. Damit der physische Körper des Toten im Jenseits überleben konnte, mußte er sich allnächtlich mit dem Ba vereinen.

Per far si che il corpo fisico del defunto sopravvivesse nell'aldilà, doveva essere riunificato al suo 'Ba' ogni notte.

Era necessário, para o morto, deslocar-se do túmulo até ao reencontro do seu Ka e tornar-se em Akh ou espírito da Vida para Além da Morte. No entanto, sendo este ritual físicamente impossível, tornou-se um dever do Ba. Em ordem de o corpo físico do morto sobreviver na Vida para Além da Morte, era necessário reunir-se com o Ba todas as noites.
