A fine limestone stele belonging to Montuhotep, with a rounded top. The scenes are in three registers with the figures carved in low relief and the inscription incised. The stele is edged with a square block pattern still retaining traces of the original colour. The first and most important register shows Montuhotep sitting in a chair with lion legs, before a large table of offerings. Under the table are two large wine jars, one of which is still sealed. A drinking cup is beside him on a tall stand. The composition of the next two registers is similar but every element is approximately half the size. In the second register Montuhotep appears together with his father and another offering table, the third register shows his daughter Henut with her husband(?) Kemku, being presented with offerings by the priest. The carving is of an extremely high standard and shows excellent detail.

The stele was bought by the Museum in 1949 from Colonel Lionel Hanbury. In a letter to the curator of the Museum dated 8 Sep tember 1949, Col. Hanbury wrote, "(The stele) has been in my family for some considerable time and as I am clearing out my house I want to get rid of it...........I am asking 10 guineas for it, but we shall not quarrel over the price." A predecessor of Hanbury showed the stele to E.A Wallis Budge at the British Museum in 1886.

Comentário general
Preservation: Intact but missing small chips at corners and edges, a few holes in the face are filled with putty. Text comment: The stele commemorates a family group but the relationships are not clear, they all appear related to each other except Renefsenebu. This may be because the stele was not intended to stand alone but in a chapel alongside other monuments of the same family. Iconography: The first and most important register shows Montuhotep sitting on a chair eith lion legs, before a large table of offerings. Under the table are two large wine jars, one of which is still sealed. A drinking cup is beside him on a tall stand. The composition of the next two registers is similar but every element is approximately half the size. In the second register Montuhotep appears together with his father at another offering table, the third register shows his daughter Henut with her husband(?) Kemku, being presented with offerings by the priest. The carving is of an extremely high standard and shows excellent detail.
