Description
A basalt heart amulet, pierced for suspension. The Egyptians considered the heart to be the seat of intelligence and originator of actions, as it also held memories of the deceased it was the organ weighed at the moment of judgement. The heart remained in the body during mummification. This amulet and the other three (1967.60.32q, r & v) found on the body were originally strung together but only fragments of the thread survived.

Amulet van basalt in de vorm van een hart, met een gat om te worden opgehangen. De Egyptenaren geloofden dat het hart de zetel was van alle intelligentie en daden. Omdat het ook de plaats was van de herinneringen van de dode werd het hart gewogen op het moment van het oordeel. Het hart was het enige orgaan dat in het lichaam achterbleef gedurende de mummificering. Dit exemplaar en drie andere harten (1967.60.32q, r & v) waren oorspronkelijk op het lichaam gebonden, maar er is alleen een fragment van de draad overgebleven.
Amulette-coeur en basalte percée pour permettre la suspension. Les Égyptiens considéraient le coeur comme le siège de l'intelligence et l'initiateur des actions. Également garant de la mémoire, il était pesé au moment du jugement osirien. Il était le seul organe laissé à l'intérieur du corps momifié. Cette amulette-coeur était placée sur le corps, enfilée conjointement avec trois autres. Du fil, il ne subsiste que des fragments.
Ein durchbohrtes Herzamulett aus Basalt. Für die Ägypter galt das Herz als Sitz des Verstandes und Ursprung der Handlungen, und da es auch die Erinnerungen bewahrte, war es das Organ, das beim Totengericht gewogen wurde. Das Herz war das einzige Organ, das bei der Mumifizierung im Körper verblieb. Dieses und drei weitere Herzen (1967.60.32q, r & v) auf der Mumie waren ursprünglich zusammen auf eine Schnur aufgezogen gewesen, von der jedoch nur Reste erhalten sind.

The amulets were removed from a mummy which was in such poor condition that it was considered unsuitable for exhibition. The amulets were revealed during radiographic examination and removed in 1967, other parts of the body were used for research purposes. Thirty amulets were found in the thoracic region and two in the abdominal area.

Site: See Object's History. Material: Basalt is an igneous rock found in several locations throughout Egypt including the Bahriya Oasis and Sinai. It was often used for heart scarabs and amulets of the Late Period.
