Wooden handle carved near the upper end with the face of the goddess Hathor, recognisable from the cow ears, denoting her maternal love. On each side the features are delicately sculpted, but partly eroded. This traditional Pharaonic motif remained in use during the Roman Period, especially for the sistrum, a rattle with metal bars shaken to provide rhythm in temple cult.
