Red pottery vase with wide mouth and tapering base. The vessel was one of the grave goods placed in a burial at Kom el-Ahmar (the Hierakonpolis of later texts), a key settlement in southern Upper Egypt during the fourth millennium BC. The pottery indicates a date in the second half of the fourth millennium, when the scattered houses of the area were gradually becoming concentrated into a major town.
