Lid of a slipper coffin

11915.jpg

The object is an incomplete lid of a slipper coffin. These lids usually consist of a broad face with arms underneath; here, the arms and mouth are missing. The eyes, nose and ears are modelled, the hair is indicated by parallel painted lines around the face.
The facial features in slipper coffins are generally not very fine, and this piece forms no exception.
