De ibis werd beschouwd als een verschijningsvorm van de god Thoth. In de Late en Ptolemeïsche Periode werden deze vogels massaal gemummificeerd en begraven in catacomben. Tegelijkertijd werden vele votiefbeeldjes zoals dit exemplaar gemaakt.
