Description
The figure is in the form of an elderly male, presumably a servant and perhaps a Nubian, dressed in a long pleated kilt, bent double under the weight of the pot carried on his shoulders and held up by his right arm. The pot is a wide-mouthed, chunky krater, with two long vertical handles, and is decorated in carved bands of checkerboards, circles and lotus leaves. The shoulder of the pot is not decorated, nor is the footed base. The pot is hollowed out inside, but there are no traces of any original contents. Originally there was a lid, perhaps of a different material such as ivory, and there is a hole for the peg or pivot on top of the rim.

Object''s History
The figure was part of the collection donated to Liverpool Museum in 1867 by Joseph Mayer (1803-1886), a Liverpool goldsmith and antiquarian. Mayer had bought it in 1839 from Joseph Sams, a Darlington bookseller, who himself had purchased it between 1830 and 1838 as part of the Egyptian collection of Charles Bogaert, a Bruges businessman (see J Sams,' Ancient Egypt: Objects of Antiquity forming part of the Extensive and Rich Collections from Ancient Egypt, brought to England by, and now in the possession of, J Sams' ( London, 1839), pl.22,2). It has been suggested that Bogaert recieved his collection as repayment of a debt from Jean-Baptiste de Lescluze, a Belgian shipowner and merchant who had collected the material in Egypt between 1824 and 1825.

General Comment
Provenance: The style suggests that this piece originally came from Thebes, but it has no proper archaeological provenance. Material: The actual figure is made of boxwood. The base appears to be of a different wood, which remains unidentified. Preservation: The figure was once broken and repaired, before it entered the Museum collection. There are traces of original paint - white and blue - but the whole was varnished black, probably in the Nineteenth century AD.
