Description
A large and well-modelled figure of the Anubis jackal, gesso over wood which has been painted black. There is a peg underneath for attachment, the figure came from the lid of a canopic chest. The head and tail are attached to the body by dowels. Anubis was one of the oldest funerary deities, his cult was assimilated with that of Osiris in the 6th Dynasty. According to myth Anubis embalmed the body of Osiris after his murder at the hands of Seth, strengthening an already existing association with the process of mummification. He was also regarded as the guardian of the Necropolis.

Groot en fraai gemodelleerd figuur van de Anoebisjakhals, in zwartgeschilderd pleisterwerk op hout. Aan de onderzijde bevindt zich een pen ter bevestiging. De figuur is afkomstig van het deksel van een canopenkist. De kop en staart zijn met deuvels aan het lichaam bevestigd. Anoebis was een van de oudste funeraire godheden. In de 6e dynastie werd zijn cultus geïncorporeerd in de cultus van Osiris. Volgens de mythe was het Anoebis die Osiris balsemde nadat deze door zijn broer Seth was vermoord, waardoor de reeds bestaande associatie met het mummificeringsproces nog versterkt werd. Anoebis werd eveneens beschouwd als de wachter van de necropolis.
Grande figure habilement sculptée représentant le chacal Anubis. Le bois a été enduit de plâtre et peint en noir. Elle comporte une cheville pour permettre la fixation et provient du couvercle d'un coffre à canopes. La tête et la queue sont fixées au corps au moyen de chevilles. Anubis était l'une des plus anciennes divinités funéraires. Son culte a été associé à celui d'Osiris durant la VIème Dynastie. Selon le mythe, Anubis embauma le corps d'Osiris tué par Seth, ce qui renforça le lien existant entre lui et le processus de momification. Il était aussi considéré comme le gardien de la Nécropole.
Eine große, gut modellierte Figur des Anubisschakals aus stuckiertem und schwarz bemaltem Holz. An der Unterseite befindet sich ein Zapfen zur Befestigung; die Figur stammt vom Deckel eines Kanopenkastens. Kopf und Schwanz sind mit Dübeln am Körper befestigt. Anubis war eine der ältesten Totengottheiten, sein Kult wurde in der 6. Dynastie an den des Osiris angeglichen. Anubis galt dem Mythos zufolge als Einbalsamierer des von Seth ermordeten Osiris; hiermit wurde eine bereits existierende Verbindung mit dem Mumifizierungsprozeß verstärkt. Er galt auch als Nekropolenwächter.

La testa e la coda sono attaccate al corpo per mezzo di viti. Anubi era una delle più vecchie divinità funerarie, ed il suo culto fu assimilato a quello di Osiride nella VI Dinastia. Secondo il mito Anubi ha imbalsamato il corpo di Osiride dopo l'assassinio operato da Seth, rinforzando in questo modo il legame già esistente fra questo dio ed il processo di mummificazione. Era anche considerato il guardiano della Necropoli.
Grande figura de Anúbis em chacal, excelentemente modelada, com gesso sobre madeira, pintado em preto. Apresenta cavilha, na parte inferior, para fixaçao. A figura provém de tampa para cofre de vaso de vísceras. A cabeça e cauda estao presas ao corpo por cavilhas. Anúbis era uma das divindades funerárias mais antigas, o seu culto era associado ao de Osíris, na VI dinastia. De acordo com a mitologia, Anúbis havia embalsamado o corpo de Osíris depois do seu assassinato nas maos de Set, cimentando uma associaçao, já existente, com o processo de mumificaçao. Era, igualmente, recordado como guardiao da Necrópolis.

La cola y la cabeza están unidas al cuerpo mediante clavijas. Anubis era una de las deidades funerarias más antiguas; su culto fue asimilado al de Osiris en la Dinastía VI. Según el mito, Anubis embalsamó el cuerpo de Osiris tras su asesinato a manos de Seth, reforzando así la relación que tenía con el proceso de momificación. También era considerado como el guardián de la necrópolis.

General Comment
Preservation: In three seperate pieces, head, body and tail. The gesso and paint are chipped in places. There is some woodworm damage and the front right and both back paws have been damaged and repaired, also the left ear.
