The Global Egyptian Museum

A splendid marble capital is beautifully carved with an interlaced basketwork design. Each side is decorated with a papyrus plant. The capital is hollow, perhaps to be used as a baptismal font containing holy water. 

This and two others that have been kept in the museum were uncovered in the vicinity of Mahatet el-Raml. 

They may once have belonged to Alexandria's first cathedral, which was built over the tomb of Saint Mark the Evangelist. Saint Mark brought Christianity to Egypt around AD 40 and was martyred in AD 68. 

These capitals are evidence of a highly developed art.

Ce splendide chapiteau en marbre est gravé de motifs en osier qui s'entremêlent. Chaque côté est décoré de papyrus. Le chapiteau est creux, peut être parce qu'il était utilisé comme fonts baptismaux pour contenir l'eau bénite.

Ce chapiteau ainsi que deux autres qui ont été conservés au musée furent découverts à proximité de Mahatet el-Raml. 

A une certaine époque, ils faisaient peut-être partie de la première cathédrale d'Alexandrie qui fut érigée sur la tombe de Saint Marc l'Evangéliste. Saint Marc introduisit le christianisme en Egypte vers l'an 40 après Jésus-Christ et mourut en martyr en 68 après Jésus-Christ.

Ces chapiteaux sont le reflet d'un art hautement développé.

تاج عمود من الرخام منحوت على شكل سلة مجدولة من خوص النخيل. زين كل جانب بأوراق نبات البردي. التاج مجوف حيث أنه استخدم كجرن معمودية، وكوعاء للماء المقدس.

لقد عثر عليه مع تاجين آخرين محفوظين فى المتحف بالقرب من محطة الرمل.

وربما قد كانوا يخصوا أول كنيسة سكندرية التي بنيت فوق قبر القديس سان ماركوس. جلب سان ماركوس المسيحية الى مصر حوالى عام 40 ميلادية، وقتل عام 68 م.

هذه التيجان تعتبر شاهدا على تطور الفن.
