The Global Egyptian Museum

The pottery piece is from the bottom of a patera, an ancient Roman shallow bowl without handles. The Alexandrian shard shows a scene of the Greek hero Hercules fighting the Nemean lion, the first of his 12 extraordinary deeds. 

Hercules is depicted nude and fighting the Nemean lion by hand. The lion places his left back foot on the knee of Hercules, and his front one on his chest. 

Hercules' arrows and club could not harm the lion, but the club is still visible in the background. Hercules won by strangling the lion, according to the myth.

Ce tesson de poterie provient du bas d'une patère, ou coupe romaine peu profonde et dépourvue d'anses. Il est orné d'une scène où l'on peut voir le héros grec Hercule aux prises avec le lion de Némée.

Il s'agit là du premier des douze travaux qu'il dut effectuer. En tenue d'Adam, Hercule combat le lion à mains nues. Le grand fauve place sa patte arrière gauche sur le genou d'Hercule alors que sa patte avant repose sur sa poitrine.

Les flèches et la massue d'Hercule ne pouvaient pas blesser le lion; toutefois, la massue est visible à l'arrière-plan. Selon la légende, Hercule vint à bout du lion en l'étranglant.

الشقفة من قاع باتيرا، أي من جفنة ضحلة رومانية قديمة بغير مقابض، ويتبين على الشقفة السكندرية منظر للبطل الإغريقي هرقل وهو يصارع الأسد النيمى في أول أعماله الإثنى عشر الخارقه. 

وقد صور هرقل عارياً يصارع الأسد النيمى بيديه، إذ يضع الأسد يسرى قدميه الخلفيتين على ركبة هيركليوس والأمامية على صدره. 

ولم تتمكن سهام هرقل أو هراوته من الإضرار بالأسد، وتظهر الهراوة واضحه في الخلفية، ولكن هرقل انتصر بخنق الأسد وفق الأسطورة.
