The statue depicts Hermanubis, Master of the Necropolises. He played a role in mummification and in granting life to the mummies that his drawn image guards.

The Greeks identified him with their god Hermes. He holds in his left hand a palm branch. On his right is a dog and he carries on his head the sacred basket called the "Kalathos," a sign of fertility.

The picture of Hermanubis appeared on the coins of the second century AD nomes. He was even found once pictured on a naos, or shrine, from the Late Period. He was known throughout both the Hellenistic and Roman worlds and his name appeared in Virgil's poetry.

Cette statue représente Hermanubis, maître des nécropoles. Il jouait un rôle dans la momification et accordait la vie aux momies. Précisons également que ces dernières étaient protégées par son image. 

Les Grecs l'identifièrent au dieu Hermès. Coiffé du "Kalathos", ou panier sacré, en signe de fertilité, il tient dans la main gauche une branche de palmier. A sa droite, on peut voir un chien.

L'image d'Hermanubis apparaît sur les pièces de monnaie des nomes du deuxième siècle après Jésus-Christ. Il fut même représenté sur un naos datant de la Basse Epoque. Connu tant dans le monde hellénistique que romain, son nom apparut dans les poèmes de Virgil.

يصور التمثال هيرمانوبيس سيد الجبانات إذ كان له دوره في التحنيط وإضفاء الحياة على المومياوات التي يرعاها شخصه المصور، وكان الإغريق قد تمثلوا فيه شخص إلههم هيرميس، وهو يقبض بيسراه سعفة نخيل، وعن يمينه كلب، كما يحمل على رأسه السلة المقدسة المسماة كالاثوس رمز الخصوبة. 

كانت صورة هيرمانوبيس تتجلى على نقود أقاليم القرن الثاني الميلادي، بل لقد وجد مرة كذلك مصوراً على مقصورة ومحراب من العصر المتأخر، وكان يعرف في أنحاء العالم الهيللينيستي والروماني كما ظهر اسمه في شعر فيرجيل.
