Kings of the Old and Middle Kingdoms built stone and mud-brick pyramids as memorials for their burials. At the time of the New Kingdom, tombs for the kings were hewn in the rock at Thebes, where a natural mound in the shape of a pyramid dominated the area. Rock-cut tombs of the officials, however, had courts and cult shrines of brick, sometimes topped by a small limestone pyramidion. 

This pyramidion came from the Theban tomb of the Army Officer and Chief of the Archers, Ry and his wife May. It is decorated on one side only by figures of the deceased and his wife kneeling and raising their arms in adoration to the rising sun. 

The vertical column of hieroglyphs reads as follows: "Praying to the sun god Re when he rises in the Eastern Horizon of the sky." The horizontal line of text gives the names and titles of Ry and May. It is evident that Ry was not the original owner of the pyramidion and he may have usurped it, and ordered that only one side should be decorated after the decorations on the other three sides had been effaced.

Les rois des anciens et moyens empires avaient l'habitude de construire des pyramides en pierre et en brique comme mémorial pour leurs enterrements. A l'époque du nouvel empire, des tombes pour les rois étaient taillées dans la pierre à Thèbes, où un tertre naturel en forme de pyramide dominait la région. Les tombes des fonctionnaires taillées dans la pierre avaient cependant des cours et des lieux de saint en brique, parfois surmontées par un petit pyramidion en calcaire. 

Ce pyramidion provient de la tombe Theban appartenant à l'officier d'armée et chef des Archers Ry et son épouse May. Il est décoré d'un coté par des figures des défunts et de son épouse, agenouillés et soulevant leurs bras au soleil levant, en signe de vénération. 

La colonne verticale des hiéroglyphes précise: «Priant au dieu soleil Rê lorsqu'il se lève dans l'horizon est du ciel». La ligne horizontale des textes précise les noms et les titres de Ry et May. Il est évident que Ry n'était pas le propriétaire originel du pyramidion; il semblerait qu'il l'ai usurpé et ordonné qu'un seul coté soit orné, après que les ornements des autres trois cotés ont été effacés.

بنى ملوك الدولتين القديمة والوسطى أهراما حجرية وطينية كنصب تذكارية لمدافنهم. وقد نحتت مقابر ملوك الدولة الحديثة في الصخر بطيبة؛ حيث طغى على المنطقة مشهد هضبة طبيعية في شكل هرم. من ناحية أخرى، كانت بمقابر كبار المسئولين التي قطعت في الصخر صالات ومقاصير عبادة، مبنية بالطوب ويعلوها هريم صغير من الحجر الجيري. 

ولقد عثر على الهريم المعروض داخل مقبرة بطيبة؛ لضابط الجيش ورئيس الرماة "راي" وزوجته "ماي". والهريم مزين على جانب واحد فقط بشكلي المتوفى وزوجته؛ وهما راكعين ويرفعان أيديهما تضرعا إلى الشمس عند بزوغها. 

ويحتوي العامود الرأسي من الكتابة الهيروغليفية على النص الآتي :"تضرعا إلى إله الشمس رع عند بزوغه في الأفق الشرقي للسماء". ويعطي السطر الأفقي أسماء وألقاب "راي" و"ماي". ومن الواضح أن "راي" لم يكن في الأصل صاحب الهريم، وإنما ربما هو قد اغتصبه وأمر بنقش جانب واحد منه؛ بعد تشويه النقوش على الجوانب الثلاثة الأخرى.
