Parchment

Parchment.jpg

Parchment is made from animal skins that first have all the hair removed, and are then rubbed smooth with a stone or similar object. It is used as a writing material and as a membrane for musical instruments such as drums and tambourines. The earliest known examples probably date from the Middle Kingdom. In Deir el-Medinah, a lute dating to the 18th Dynasty has been found with parchment covering its sound box.
